Locating duplicates

Locating duplicates

I am new to Aperature and just downloaded 6,700 images from iPhoto. Despite asking Aperature to NOT download duplicates, Aperature Assistant has identified about 400.
Despite viewing the screengrabs and reading the instructions many times - it still makes no sense to me.
What is an "empty 'ApAssist Duplicate' tag"
Where and how do I find it?
Thanks
Ralph (housewolf)

Hi Ralph, Aperture Assistant

Hi Ralph,

Aperture Assistant will make a new custom metadata tag called "ApAssist Duplicate" for all the images that it thinks are duplicates, and places the exact file size of the image into it. You can find these tagged images by going to the top-level of the Library and using the all-Library search.

In the search HUD, use the cogwheel at the top right to add more search options to the HUD - the last item in the menu is 'Other Metadata' and includes things like the Version Name, timezones, pixel sizes and any of your own custom metadata that you've added to the database.

After running the check for duplicates, this menu should include "ApAssist Duplicate" as seen in the screengrab. You want to search for any image that has something in the tag, so the 'is not empty' option should show these.

I'm aware that if you don't know your way around Aperture's search functions this can be a bit intimidating, but it's also the most powerful as you can set up your own metadata views to include the tag, and then sort them by it as the easiest way to view the dupes.

As an alternative it would be possible to make a new Album containing all the dupes, but this is very slow, sometimes taking several seconds per image you add to the Album. In a big Library with many duplicates, that could mean waiting an hour or more instead of a minute or two for the tagging. :-(
